RemoveMacAI Offers a Reversible Way to Strip AI Assets From Macs

A newly released open-source utility is giving Mac owners a way to disable a broad set of AI-powered features and recover disk capacity consumed by their associated local assets.

RemoveMacAI targets Apple silicon systems running macOS 27, where the previous system-wide switch for disabling Apple Intelligence is no longer available. Instead of forcing users to locate numerous individual settings, the command-line utility consolidates the process and can prevent deleted assets from automatically returning.

The developer estimates that roughly 12GB may be recovered, although actual usage varies significantly between systems.

More Than a Simple File Deletion Script

RemoveMacAI takes a notably different approach from utilities that manually erase protected operating-system files.

SIP Remains Enabled

The utility installs a configuration profile that users must explicitly approve through System Settings.

That profile applies Apple's restriction mechanisms to supported AI features, while additional settings are adjusted where equivalent restriction keys are unavailable.

Downloaded assets are then removed through Apple's own asset-management service rather than by directly deleting files under /System.

As a result, System Integrity Protection remains enabled throughout the process.

Local Redirection Prevents Automatic Downloads

Deleting the assets alone would create another problem: macOS could simply retrieve them again.

Model Requests Are Sent to a Closed Port

RemoveMacAI addresses this by configuring the profile to redirect requests for removed AI assets toward a closed local port.

The download consequently fails before the operating system can restore the removed components.

According to the project documentation, the utility itself makes no network requests and collects no user data.

Siri and Multiple AI Features Are Disabled

The storage savings come with a substantial functionality trade-off.

RemoveMacAI can disable Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, notification and application summaries, Mail smart replies, inline predictions, Spatial Photos, Photos Clean Up and Xcode predictive code completion.

Foundation Models Applications Are Also Affected

The impact extends beyond Apple's visible consumer features.

Applications relying on the company's on-device Foundation Models framework can lose access to those capabilities. The “Use Model” action in Shortcuts, Visual Intelligence and natural-language Calendar editing are also affected.

Dictation remains operational because its speech models are handled separately.

Users can also selectively preserve supported capabilities rather than disabling everything.

Changes Can Be Reversed

The project includes a rollback mechanism that restores the previous configuration.

Running the revert operation removes the profile and restores affected settings. macOS can subsequently retrieve the required assets again when an AI-dependent feature needs them.

Storage May Not Return Immediately

Users should not assume the operation has failed if System Settings continues showing AI-related disk consumption immediately afterward.

The utility instructs Apple's asset service to release the relevant components, but macOS performs the underlying cleanup on its own schedule. Storage reporting can therefore lag behind the removal process.

Compatibility Is Currently Narrow

RemoveMacAI requires Apple silicon and currently targets macOS 27. Systems running macOS 26 or earlier are not supported.

Version compatibility also matters: the project's documentation specifies that systems running macOS 27.0.1 should use RemoveMacAI 0.2.3 or later.

Future macOS Changes Could Affect the Technique

There is another longer-term caveat. Some configuration-profile restriction keys on which the project depends were previously deprecated by Apple.

They continue to function in current macOS 27 releases, but future operating-system changes could alter that behavior.

For users comfortable with third-party command-line utilities, RemoveMacAI provides something macOS 27 no longer offers through a single native control: a consolidated and reversible mechanism for reducing the operating system's local AI footprint without weakening SIP or manually altering protected system files.
